Surry Hills Children’s Court
Surry Hills Children’s Court is located at 66-78 Albion Street, Surry Hills. It is a purpose-built children’s court that was renovated in 2016.
The easiest way to get to Surry Hills Children’s Court is by taking a train to Central train station and then walking five to ten minutes to the courthouse. There is also metered street parking and paid parking stations within walking distance however parking is scarce. There are also regular bus services throughout the CBD.
The Surry Hills Children’s Court is the court where all criminal matters involving children within the area commence. While the court deals primarily with criminal matters involving children, it also hears urgent bail applications for adults on Saturdays and Sundays. That means, if you have been arrested and refused bail and require an urgent bail application on a weekend, there is a strong chance you will appear before a magistrate at this court irrespective of your age.
The Surry Hills Children’s Court is more informal than the Local Court and all Children’s Court matters are heard in closed court, which means the only people in the actual courtroom are the court staff, legal representatives and members of the NSW Police Force, the magistrate, the child and any support persons. If you have a matter in the Surry Hills Children’s Court, make sure you arrive at court well before the time your matter is listed to be heard which is usually 10:00 am. You should be neatly and conservatively dressed and you should come prepared to be at court for most of the day.
The child will not be referred to by their name, rather, they will be referred to as “Master” or “the young person” and their name will not be published on any online court list. You will be able to establish which courtroom your matter will be heard in by asking at the court registry.
Taking the next step and contacting a lawyer can be scary. Our lawyers will make you feel comfortable so you can talk about your situation.
