Byron Bay Local Court
The Local Court is the court where all criminal matters involving adults commence. It is also the court that hears summary criminal matters, including traffic offences and Apprehended Domestic Violence Order applications. The Byron Bay Local Court sits as the Byron Bay Children’s Court for matters involving people under the age of 18. These are held in the same room as the Local Court, but anyone not connected with the case will be asked to leave when the court is sitting as the Children’s Court.
If you have a matter before the Byron Bay Local Court, make sure you arrive well before the time your matter is listed. You should be neatly and conservatively dressed and you should come prepared to be at court for several hours. The doors to the court typically open at 9am. It is ideal to arrive about this time. The court list commences at 9:30am.
Check the court lists (stuck up on the wall) when you arrive. If you are unsure about the courtroom your matter is in, ask someone in the registry office.
If you are flying into Byron, it is an approximate 31-minute drive from the Ballina Byron Gateway airport to the court. Byron Bay also has a bus depot in the town centre. The Byron Bay ‘Bat bus’, which provides affordable bus services for young persons aged 12-25 who need help with transport, is also located on Middleton Street.
