Accredited Specialists who attend Cooma
Cooma Local Court
The Local Court is the court where all criminal matters commence. It will hear cases about all kinds of criminal and traffic offenses, including Assaults, Domestic Violence, Drinking Driving, and Apprehended Domestic Violence Order applications. However, if a criminal matter is of a level of seriousness that it must be committed to a higher court, it will not be finalised at Cooma. The matter will instead be transferred to the nearest District Court, most likely Queanbeyan.
Criminal matters where the accused is under 18 are heard by the Cooma Children’s Court, which sits in the same courtroom as the Local Court. The Children’s Court is a closed court, meaning that people who are not involved in the case will be asked to leave the room while the matter is heard.
Cooma is 1.5 hours’ drive from Canberra and just over 4 hours’ drive from Sydney. It can be reached by bus from Canberra or by plane from Sydney.
If you have a matter in the Cooma Local Court, you should come prepared to spend at least half a day at court. However, if you have a traffic matter, and are liable to a period of disqualification on conviction, we strongly recommend that you avoid driving to court.
The courthouse is relatively small. Most attendees congregate outside until their matter is called. On arrival, you should make yourself known to the associate or registrar of the court, who is generally holding a clipboard, and noting people’s appearances. Ensure that you arrive at least 15 minutes before your matter is listed to allow you time to familiarise yourself with the court and advise staff of your appearance.
Taking the next step and contacting a lawyer can be scary. Our lawyers will make you feel comfortable so you can talk about your situation.
