Ipswich Magistrates Court

The Ipswich Courts are located at 43 Ellenborough Street, Ipswich. The courts sit from Monday to Friday, commencing at 9.00 am, with the courthouse opening at 8.30 am.

The Magistrates Court deals with summary criminal matters, including traffic matters, where the accused is an adult. When dealing with criminal matters where the accused is under 18, it sits as the Children’s Court on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The Ipswich Magistrates Court sits as the Murri Court each Thursday.

Police domestic violence applications are heard on Mondays and private domestic violence application on Tuesdays. However, any urgent applications can be heard at 2.00 pm daily if required.

Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays are the days allocated to dealing with probation and parole matters as that is when a representative from the Department of Corrections is available and present at court. Thursday is also the summary call over day and the committal call over commences at 10.00 am each Wednesday.

Before a matter is listed for a lengthy plea in the Ipswich Courts, a certificate of readiness must be completed and signed by the defence and the prosecution. This must be tendered to the court at the time parties are seeking to list the matter. There is also an expectation that any lengthy material, such as pre-sentence reports, are sent to the court in advance of the sentencing hearing.

The District Court also has a permanent sitting in Ipswich. There are two resident District Court judges at Ipswich. They are Judge Horneman-Wren SC and Judge Lynch QC.
