Esperance Magistrates Court

The Esperance Courts are located at 100 Dempster Street, Esperance in Western Australia. The court itself is located within the central business district of Esperance and is close to a range of coffee shops and eateries.

Esperance Magistrates Court operates from Monday to Friday between 9.00 am and 4.00 pm. It deals with a range of criminal, traffic and civil law matters.

The WA District Court has civil and criminal sittings which take place at the Esperance Courts three times a year. These dates are set in advance. Civil and criminal sittings of the WA Supreme Court also occur three times a year.

When attending the Esperance Courts you should dress in smart, conservative, attire. Upon entering the court, you will be asked to remove any loose items such as sunglasses or hats. These items will need to remain off your head and face, whilst you are inside the building.

Mobile phones are not to be used whilst in the courtroom. It is recommended that all mobile phones are turned off. If for some reason your mobile telephone cannot be turned off it must be placed on silent mode before entering the courtroom. If a matter is urgent it is advisable to phone as it can take up to five business days for any response to an email to be received.

The Esperance Magistrates Court deals mainly with simple criminal offences and traffic and civil matters (such as extra-ordinary driving license and residential tenancy matters).

Esperance Children’s Court

The Esperance Magistrates Court also sits as the Esperance Children’s Court, hearing summary criminal matters where the accused person is aged under 18. When a care and protection of children matter is filed in Esperance, it will be transferred into the Perth Children’s Court list, which will deal with the preliminary mentions. If the matter goes to contested hearing, a Perth magistrate will travel to Esperance to hear the matter locally.
