Colac Magistrates Court

The Magistrates Court is the court where all criminal matters involving adults commence. It is also the court that hears summary criminal matters including traffic offences, and domestic violence order applications. The Colac Children’s Court, located in the same building, deals with criminal matters where the accused is under 18 as well as hearing child protection and adoption matters on certain days.

If you have a matter in the Colac Magistrates Court, make sure you arrive at court well before the time your matter is listed to be heard. You should be neatly and conservatively dressed, and you should come prepared to be at court for most of the day.

When you arrive at the Colac Magistrates Court, you will need to pass through security, and this will usually require that you remove any items from your pocket and place them in a tray to be scanned through by security. Once you pass through security, you will need to approach the court registry, which is located on the bottom floor and make known that you are in appearance at court. If you are represented on the day, your solicitor will usually advise the court registry of your appearance on your behalf and will direct you as to where you need to go.

If you are not represented, the court registrar will advise you which courtroom your matter will be heard in by searching the list, and then you will be directed to the appropriate courtroom.
