Emerald Magistrates Court
The Emerald Courts are located at 45-49 Egerton Street, Emerald. The building is small and very easy to miss. The District and Supreme Courts sit in the same court as the Magistrates Court.
The Magistrates Court finalised summary criminal matters including traffic matters where the accused is an adult. The Children’s Court, which sits in the same building, deals with criminal matters where the accused is under 18.
Even though there is a Supreme Court and District Court that sit at Emerald, there are no permanent judges and they will only circuit there once every couple of months for a few days. For this reason, it is important to get a lawyer before your first court event so you know how you are going to proceed when you go to court.
If you have matter in the Emerald Courts, you should arrive at court no later than 8:30 AM. Most matters will start at 9 am but certain matters (such as applications to the court) may start at different times. Since this is the only court in the area, it is a busy court and there may be a line to pass through security especially if there have been any recent COVID-19 restrictions. Once you enter the building, the registry is on your right and the courtroom is straight ahead.
There is plenty of parking on the street but there are some parks with time limits. It is impossible to predict how long court will run for so you should be prepared to be there for a good part of the day. If you are going to court for a traffic matter where a period of licence disqualification may be imposed, do not drive to court.
