Hay Local Court

The Hay Local Court is located on Moppett Street, on the corner of Pine Street. The Local Court is the court where all criminal matters involving adults commence. It is also the court that hears summary criminal matters, including traffic offences and Apprehended Domestic Violence Order applications.

The Local Court sits as the Children’s Court for matters involving people under the age of 18. These are held in the same room as the Local Court, but anyone not connected with the case will be asked to leave when the court is sitting as the Children’s Court.

The District Court of New South Wales, which finalises serious indictable criminal matters, does not sit at Hay. If you have a District Court matter arising from the Hay area, you should expect it to be finalised at Griffith.

If you have a matter before Hay Local Court, make sure you arrive well before the time the matter is listed. You should be neatly and conservatively dressed, and you should come prepared to be at court for several hours. The court list is held by a registrar, who will circulate outside the courtroom before court begins, and ask people to check in.
