David Porter is Armstrong Legal's Police Accountability lawyer in NSW. This is a specific area of law which combines skills from the areas of criminal law, civil litigation, administrative law and employment law. David's diverse experience has equipped him with the skills necessary to perform in this area.
Prior to joining Armstrong Legal, David ran a statewide police accountability practice for a NSW community legal centre for 6 years. David has acted in cases across NSW, ranging from unlawful requests for identification all the way up to coronial inquests into deaths in custody. David has experience in using a wide range of legal tools to scrutinise police actions, and has the knowledge to make the best recommendation for each individual case.
David can advise on a wide variety of matters involving the police, including civil litigation against the State of NSW in District or Supreme Courts, formal complaints against individual officers under the Police Act, and coronial inquests.
Police Accountability cases can often feel confusing and unfair for clients, and David takes care to ensure that clients feel that they have been treated fairly, honestly and respectfully by him. David aims to provide clients with the best advice and advocacy to allow them to exercise their legal rights.
David has regularly appeared in national media as a commentator on cases of police misconduct. His sensible, evidence-based approach has meant that government bodies from multiple states have requested his insights on practical solutions to police misconduct.
David is a member of several Law Society of NSW Committees, and in 2015 was elected to the Council of the Law Society of NSW.
