Paramedics Are Being Used As “punching Bags” Despite The Threat Of Gaol Time

Paramedics Are Being Used As punching Bags Despite The Threat Of Gaol Time
Unfortunately, violence against emergency workers is occurring on an increasingly regular basis, leading to NSW Ambulance Inspector Norm Rees likening paramedics to punching bags.

Such violence continues despite criminal offences and heavy penalties being introduced in 2010 to protect on-duty ambulance officers and punish those who intentionally obstruct or hinder them while they are providing ambulance services. The maximum penalty for this offence is 50 penalty units (which currently equates to a fine of $5,500) and/or 2 years imprisonment. If the offender obstructs or hinders the officer by an act of violence he or she faces up to 5 years imprisonment.

These charges are treated extremely seriously by courts and the consequences can be significant. Contrary to popular belief, the fact that the defendant was intoxicated by alcohol or drugs doesn’t prevent a person from being found guilty, nor is it something that can be taken into account as a basis for leniency when a court decides the appropriate sentence.

With gaol time being a real possibility, if you have been charged for obstructing or hindering an ambulance officer it is essential that you seek legal advice as early as possible.
